Top 3 Kitchen Remodeling Mistakes to Avoid
The kitchen has become the hub of the home. No longer are they places we only use for food preparation. Now they are the area where we socialize both with family and friends. For these reasons it is important that the kitchen be both beautiful and functional. Because this space is central to how we live in our homes it is important to avoid making major kitchen remodeling mistakes in the design of your kitchen.
Not only do we cook and eat in our kitchens, but more and more our lives revolve around this space. Designing a kitchen remodel is complicated. There are lots of moving parts that require careful planning and close attention to detail. Of all the things that are important in designing a kitchen, here are the three main mistakes that people tend to make when remodeling their kitchens: Ignoring the work triangle, ignoring functionality, and doing what everyone else is doing rather than what you need. Our design team has years of experience in helping you avoid these mistakes. We believe in remodeling once and then enjoy it for years, rather than wishing you would have done it differently. Ignoring the work triangle: The work triangle is the path between the 3 most used kitchen areas- the sink, refrigerator and stove. Ideally in a kitchen the paths between those three objects is clear of major obstacles (like islands) and close enough to each other, but not next to each other. It’s important to keep in mind that the flow between these areas is particularly important because heavy, awkward items are sometimes carried between these areas for meal planning and preparation.
Forgetting functionality: While finishing touches like tile, countertops, cabinet color and knobs are all important in the final product, ultimately you don’t want a kitchen that only looks pretty- you want one that functions well. It’s important to plan how doors will open so they don’t bump into each other and to adjust the height of microwaves so they can be easily reached by those who will be using them. Other important functional items to keep in mind are things like range hoods and both task and general lighting.
Designing your space for other people: While it’s important to have a good sense of who will be using your kitchen and plan your space to take other users into account, ultimately your kitchen is exactly that- your kitchen. It needs to be a space that both works for you, and also makes you comfortable. You need to pick color palettes and finishes that appeal to you. So add the things that you will need and use in your kitchen, not the things that you think that other people think you need to have.
